If you’re a homeowner, you may have considered trying to define room for your kids or pets to run around in the yard. Maybe you’re putting in a pool and the law mandates you protect outsiders from getting into it. Or maybe you just want a little privacy from the neighbors. In any of these situations, you have thought about putting a fence around your yard. With the right people helping you, it may be easier than you think. Before you begin, here are a few things you need to know if you need a fence:
Before You Do Anything…
Whenever you plan to make structural changes to your property, there are several authorities who need to know, or may even require a permit from you. Talk to these entities before you begin:
Your neighbors – They may be considering the same thing, so you may be able to share the project. Even if not, it is common courtesy to let them know something could be going up against their property.
Your HOA – If you live in a community with a homeowners’ association, they may have restrictions about what type of structure you can add.
Your local zoning board – This is where you will go to get the permit you must have before building can begin.
Your local utility companies – They will tell you if there are any gas, water, electric, etc. lines under your property that you will need to avoid. Before you dig, call 811.
Now You Can Start Planning
Once you have done the groundwork (so to speak), you can move on to the fun part – choosing the style. Think about the goal of your project. If your goal is privacy, you might not be going with the pretty white picket fence in your dreams. The cost might be another consideration driving your decision, so be sure to ask your contractor about all of your options.
No matter the reason for adding a fence to your property, be ready for a process. Stand Strong Fencing is here to walk you through that process so that you can get the most out of the fence you choose.
